John McAfee, 75, was discovered dead in his prison cell after his extradition to the US was approved.

According to Reuters the justice department in Catalan believes “everything points” to McAfee taking his own life.

McAfee evaded US authorities for years and was wanted in several states for tax evasion charges. He was arrested at Barcelona Airport in October for avoiding years worth of income tax.

The entrepreneur launched his lucrative antivirus software in 1987, earning him an impressive fortune. Years later he would relocate to Belize, living next-door to a man named Gregory Faull. In 2012, Faull was found murdered in his home. McAfee fled Belize and police decided he was no longer a suspect, though mystery continued to follow him.

In December 2012 he was deported from Guatemala and subsequently met his wife, Janice Dyson – a sex work who solicited him. In 2016 he announced his intention to run as a presidential candidate for the Libertarian Party, but was ultimately unsuccessful.

McAfee was arrested in 2019 in the Dominican Republic, where he and five others had been docked on his yacht. He and his party were freed but had been held under suspicion of carrying high calibre weapons and ammunition.

The 75-year-old’s tragic and untimely death has sparked speculation over its true cause. A post by McAfee, unearthed on Twitter, said he wouldn’t commit suicide and had tattooed the phrase ‘$WHACKD’ on his arm.

Hours after his death was reported, a ‘Q’ was posted on McAfee’s Instagram account – assumed to be a reference to the QAnon conspiracy – but was quickly deleted. The person behind the post is unknown.
