The Cleveland Browns confirmed the trade of quarterback Deshaun Watson on Sunday morning and now they’ve been forced to defend themselves over the signing.

Watson joins the Browns from the Houston Texans. But the announcement has been met with significant backlash, leaving the Browns no choice but to defend their decision to complete the trade.

The 26-year-old faces twenty-two civil lawsuits, many of which stem from alleged sexual assault and misconduct.

Browns owners, Dee and Jimmy Haslam, attempted to assure fans that they had completed a vigorous evaluation before pushing ahead with the move.

“We are acutely aware and empathetic to the highly person sentiments expressed about this decision,” the pair said.

“Our team’s comprehensive evaluation process was of utmost importance due to the sensitive nature of this situation and the complex factors involved.

“We also understand there are still some legal proceedings that are ongoing and we will respect due process.”

They added: “He [Watson] was humble, sincere and candid. In our conversations, Deshaun detailed his commitment to leading our team; he understands and embraces the hard work needed to build his name both in the community and on the field.”

But while the Browns‘ owners insist on their exhaustive evaluation, the attorney representing the women suing Watson says that the organisation did not reach out to him.

Tony Buzbee tells CNN: “The Browns organization did not reach out to me. I didn’t expect them to do so and can understand why they didn’t. But knowing what I know, they probably should have.”
