Disney has issued a statement following Peter Dinklage’s criticism of its upcoming Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs remake.

The Game of Thrones actor accused the studio of reinforcing negative stereotypes towards dwarfism during a conversation on the WTF with Marc Maron podcast.

Though he acknowledged that Disney was pushing for racial diversity in the casting of Rachel Zegler as Snow White, he added: “You’re still making that backwards story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together?”

Now, in a statement shared by The Hollywood Reporter, Disney says it is “taking a different approach” with the seven characters.

“To avoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original animated film, we are taking a different approach with these seven characters and have been consulting with members of the dwarfism community,” stated the studio. “We look forward to sharing more as the film heads into production after a lengthy development period.”

It is yet to be revealed what the new approach to these characters will look like, however, The Wrap reports that it has obtained casting call sheets which describe them as “magical creatures”.

Marc Webb is helming the new picture, starring Zegler alongside Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen. La La Land’s Benji Pasek and Justin Paul are also attached to write new music for the film.
