Dr. Oz Clarifies Remarks Released On Social Media Suggesting Reopening Schools Would Result In ‘Only’ 2 Percent Death Rise

Dr. Oz was under fire on Thursday after suggesting reopening schools would ‘only’ result in a 2% death rise.
The 59-year-old heart surgeon originally stated during a conversation on Fox News, “Schools are a very appetising opportunity. I just saw a nice piece in The Lancet arguing the opening of schools may only cost us 2 to 3%, in terms of total mortality.”
He continued to say, “Any, you know, any life is a life lost, but … that might be a tradeoff some folks would consider.” with Fernand Amandi of the Strange Days podcast pointing out, “There are 56 million+ kids in United States schools. 2% – 1.1 million dead kids. 3% – 1.7 million dead kids.”

In response to the backlash on social media regarding Oz’s original comments, he provided a new statement on Twitter, saying, “As a heart surgeon, I’ve spent my career fighting to save lives in the operating room by minimising risks. At the same time, I’m being asked constantly how we will be able to get people back to their normal lives.”
Oz also wrote on Twitter, “I’ve realised my comments on risks around opening schools have confused and upset people, which was never my intention. I misspoke.”
