Eddie Redmayne Says Playing A Trans Woman Was “A Mistake”

Eddie Redmayne has said that his role in The Danish Girl was a mistake.
Redmayne received an Oscar nomination for his role as Lili Elbe, the first trans person to undergo sex-reassignment surgery.
The 2015 film was criticised for casting Eddie, a cis-gender man, in the role.
In an interview with The Sunday Times, the British actor has shared that he wouldn’t accept the role if he was offered it today.
“No, I wouldn’t take it on now,” he said. “I made that film with the best intentions, but I think it was a mistake.”
“The bigger discussion about the frustrations around casting is because many people don’t have a chair at the table,” he continues.
“There must be a levelling, otherwise we are going to carry on having these debates.”
Eddie is currently playing Emcee in the production of Cabaret at Playhouse Theatre.
