Former FIFA President Sepp Blatter and his ex-UEFA counterpart Michel Platini have been charged with fraud by the Swiss authorities.

Both Blatter and Platini were charged with fraud and other offences by Swiss persecutors on Tuesday, after an investigation into a controversial payment of 2m Swiss francs.

“This payment damaged FIFA’s assets and unlawfully enriched Platini,” Swiss prosecutors said in a statement.

The investigation into the 2m francs payment, which began in 2015, centred on a written request from Platini sent to FIFA in 2011, requesting that he be paid backdated additional salary for working as a presidential adviser to Blatter from 1998-2002.

Blatter authorised FIFA to make the payment to Platini within weeks of receiving the request. Both Blatter and Platini have long since denied any wrongdoing, in relation to the payment claiming that they had a verbal agreement for the money to be paid.
