Gaspard Ulliel has died, aged thirty-seven, after a tragic skiing accident.

According to France 24, the accident occurred on Wednesday (January 19) in the Savoie region of the French Alps. Ulliel was reportedly rushed to hospital after colliding with another skier but was later pronounced dead from a head injury.

His death comes just one day after the first trailer for Marvel’s upcoming Moon Knight series was released. The 37-year-old actor will feature in the show as Midnight Man.

“He dazzled all the lenses and was at the top of the bill for more than two decades,” said a statement from the Elysee Palace.

In a tribute posted on Instagram by Xavier Dolan, the filmmaker wrote that he loved Ulliel “deeply” and said that he “transformed” his life.

“It is implausible, insane, and so painful to even think of writing these words. Your discreet laughter, your watchful eye,” he said. “Your scar. Your talent. Your listening. Your whispers, your kindness. All the features of your person were in fact born of a sparkling sweetness.”

“It is your whole being that has transformed my life, a being that I loved deeply, and that I will always love. I can’t say anything else, I’m exhausted, stunned by your departure.”

Ulliel was one of France’s best-known actors, famous for his roles in Hannibal Rising, A Very Long Engagement, Saint Laurent, and It’s Only the End of the World.

He is survived by his girlfriend Gaelle Pietri and their six-year-old son.
