Jennifer Carpenter Returning For ‘Dexter’ Limited Series

Jennifer Carpenter is reprising her role as the sister to titular murderer Dexter, in the limited Showtime revival.
Carpenter’s return was confirmed by former castmate John Lithgow in an interview for Deadline. Lithgow will also be staging a return as his character Arthur Mitchell.
Jennifer Carpenter’s character Debra Morgan, was killed off in the season finale of the final season, leaving the nature of her return a mystery. It seems likely the character will feature in flashbacks, unless showrunners seek a dramatic rewrite of the final season.
“This isn’t Dexter season nine. … This was an opportunity to write a second finale for the show.” Said showrunner Clyde Phillips in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
Many fans were left frustrated by the conclusion of the original series, which saw Dexter disappear inside a hurricane to become a lumberjack in Oregon. Star Michael C. Hall admitted to Times Radio that he found the ending “infuriating”.
“It’s been gratifying and I think the show ended in a way that was pretty mystifying at best if not infuriating for people.” Said Hall. “But that at least set the stage for us to return and answer more definitively what the hell happened to this guy.”
The revival series, set 10 years after the conclusion of the original, finds Dexter (Hall) residing in Upstate New York under a new name.
