Nigel Lythgoe has said that boxing matches between celebrates and retired fight stars has led to a reviving interest in the sport.

Speaking to TMZ, the former American Idol producer said that likes of Jake Paul and Bryce Hall are breathing life into a sport that was struggling.

“[Boxing] needed something. Because mixed martial arts really took over a little bit and we’d lost a lot of heroes like Muhammad Ali,” Lythgoe said.

“We’re losing heroes. So, we’ve got to find some other way of attracting young people to boxing again.” he added.

The producer also revealed that he is in the process of making a new competition show called ‘So You Think You Can Fight’, which he hopes will be able to bring even more celebrities into the sport of boxing.
