NWSL Releases Regular Season Schedule

The long-awaited National Women’s Soccer League schedule has finally been released, with opening day set for April 29, 2022. 

This year will be the league’s tenth regular season, and will see it expand to twelve teams for the first time.

Each team will play their opening game across the first weekend, with action from Friday 29 April to Sunday 1 May.

NWSL newcomers Angel City will host North Carolina Courage in their first-ever league game on the Friday.

The following day will see Portland Thorns take on Kansas City Current, the Chicago Red Stars face Racing Louisville and Washington Spirit host OL Reign.

Closing action from the first weekend will come on Sunday where the Houston Dash welcome league newbies San Diego Wave, and Orlando Pride face NJ/NY Gotham.

The NWSL have also tried to schedule games away from international windows, limiting the number of players teams will lose midseason.

“As part of the league’s balanced framework for 2022, a significantly smaller number of contests have been scheduled during FIFA windows, allowing for fewer conflicts for the league’s most accomplished players who compete with both club and country,” they wrote.

The season is set to end on October 2, where the top six placed teams will qualify for the NWSL playoffs.

The Championship game to decide the title is scheduled for October 29.
