The oldest original member of The Monkees, Peter Tork, has died aged 77.

His family announced the news saying, “It is with beyond-heavy and broken hearts that we share the devastating news that our friend, mentor, teacher and amazing soul, Peter Tork, has passed from this world”.

Peter was with a rare form of cancer, adenoid cystic carcinoma, in 2009, but it is unclear if this was the cause of his death.

He played bass and keyboard for The Monkees, also singing on various tracks.
