The sexual abuse trial against R Kelly is nearing it’s conclusion as the prosecution delivers it’s closing argument.

Kelly is charged with a multitude of offences including sexual abuse, racketeering and bribery. If convicted, Kelly faces decades in prison.

The New York Times detailed the 3-hour statement delivered by prosecutor, Elizabeth Geddes on Wednesday (September 23). The defence will present their closing argument later today.

“For many years, what happened in the defendant’s world stayed in the defendants world.” Stated Geddes. “But no longer.”

“He used lies, manipulation, threats and physical abuse to dominate his victims.” Adding that his abuse was hidden “in plain sight.”

Geddes went on to describe the large network of employees and associates who facilitated Kelly’s abuse. She pointed to the example of one employee who allegedly bribed a government official to allow Kelly’s marriage to an underage Aaliyah.

The R&B singer is accused of sexually abusing the then-15-year-old Aaliyah and unlawfully marrying her when it seemed she was pregnant. Fearing prosecution for sexual activity with a minor, Kelly allegedly pushed for Aaliyah to get an abortion.

“We all know what the defendant was thinking,” Said Geddes. “No baby, no jail.”

“Just because you have one of your henchmmen do your dirty work doesn’t make you any less responsible,” Added Geddes. “The defendant’s pattern of sexual abuse of minors didn’t change after he wed. In fact, it didn’t skip a beat.”

The closing statements come in the wake of R Kelly’s decision not to testify during the trial. His decision means he avoids cross-examination by the prosecution.
