‘Rust’ Armourer Allegedly Made Nicolas Cage Storm Off Set

The armourer on the set of Rust, Hannah Gutierrez Reed, allegedly caused Nicolas Cage to storm off set while working on her last production.
Gutierrez was responsible for all weaponry on the Rust set in New Mexico, where Alec Baldwin fatally shot cinematographer Halyna Hutchins with a live round. Baldwin had been handed the weapon by assistant director Dave Halls, who had declared the gun “cold” – meaning it was supposed to be unloaded and safe.
Rust marked Gutierrez’s second time as an armourer, having worked on the set of The Old Way only months earlier.
Now in a report by The Wrap, a key grip from The Old Way claims that Gutierrez was repeatedly reprimanded for failing to follow gun protocols. In one particular incident described by Stu Brumbaugh, Gutierrez caused the star, Nicolas Cage, to storm off set after she unexpectedly discharged a firearm.
“Make an announcement, you just blew my f***ing eardrums out!” Cage reportedly yelled before leaving the set in anger. It was allegedly the second time such an incident had occurred.
Brumbaugh himself says that he requested that Gutierrez be “let go”.
“After the second round, I was pissed off. We were moving too fast. She’s a rookie,” he said.
Other issues detailed by Brumbaugh included times where Gutierrez had carried pistols under her arms so they were aimed at people behind her. She also allegedly walked onto the set without announcing live rounds or blanks.
Brumbaugh added that the fault lay with producers for placing someone so inexperienced in such an important role.
“She was doing everything by herself in that movie and on the other movie. If there was one more person in the other movie, the tragedy wouldn’t have happened,” he said
