Shakira is being told she may need to stand trial on tax fraud charges in Spain.

A judge has ruled on Tuesday, September 27, 2022, that prosecutors can start the proceedings for a trial against Shakira on tax fraud x 6.

According to legal documentation, seen by unCrazed, the singer has been accused of failing to pay a 2012 and 2014 tax bill, totalling 14.5 million euros. During that time frame, the musicians official residence was in the Bahamas, but Spanish officials believe she spent more than half her time in their country and failed to pay the taxes owed.

If she were to stand trial and is found guilty, she could face 8-years in prison and hefty fines, at least that’s what prosecutors are hoping will happen. In an interview with ELLE, Shakira explained, “I’ve paid everything they claimed I owed even before they filed a lawsuit. So as of today, I owe zero to them.”
