News of the engagement comes after Cowell revealed that the pandemic had brought the couple closer.
Speaking with OK! Magazine, the 62-year-old music mogul described COVID as “the real test.”
“Like everyone, we were in lockdown for a long time and that’s when you realise whether or not you actually enjoy each others company or not. And we really, really did,” he said. “So to answer your question… yes, the romance is still alive!”
The couple, who share a 7-year-old son named Eric, have been together since 2013.
Their relationship made headlines when Silverman’s husband and Cowell’s friend, Andrew Silverman, accused the pair of having an affair and subsequently filed for divorce.
The relationship garnered further media attention after it was revealed that Silverman was expecting a baby.
“Lauren has been by his side and you know they’ve been through so much together. And I think she’s the one, but I don’t know if she ever thought he would put a ring on it. And then last night we all get the text saying, ‘It’s happening.’”
Cowell, who severely broke his back in 2020, stated in an interview with Extra TV that he “couldn’t have gotten through it” without Silverman.
“She was amazing. Both her and Eric, they were like my support. I couldn’t have gotten through it without them, so we got closer.”
