February 2022 will see The BRIT Awards return for its 42nd annual show and they’ve announced upcoming changes to the ceremony. The awards show will be steering away from gendered categories next year.

Instead of male or female awards, they will now be known as Artist of the Year and International Artist of the Year to celebrate “artists solely for their music and work, rather than how they choose to identify or as others may see them, as part of the BRITs’ commitment to evolving the show to be as inclusive as possible.”

Four new genre awards will also be added to the line-up, recognising Alternative/Rock, Hip-Hop/Grime/Rap, Dance, and Pop/R’n’B acts.

The eligibility window for the categories is between January 1 to December 9 2021, excluding the Rising Artist award.

And there will be some familiar faces when the ceremony hits screens next year with Mo Gilligan confirmed as the host, and Clara Amfo and Maya Jama taking on presenting duties for the Nominations show and Red Carpet show.

“It’s an absolute privilege to host the 2022 BRIT Awards, I’m truly honoured to be asked,” said Gilligan.

“We’re already in the extensive planning stages and all I can say is, I promise we’re going to give it all we’ve got to create an incredible night for music fans everywhere. Let’s go!”

The celebration of British musicians will commence on Tuesday 8 February 2022.
