‘The Crown’ Triumphs At The #EmmysSoWhite

The long-anticipated 73rd Primetime Emmys saw streaming services cement their place amongst the industries biggest producers with Netflix’s The Crown and Apple’s Ted Lasso triumph. 

The Crown won for best drama, as well as winning four best acting categories.

Gillian Anderson, Olivia Colman, Josh O’Connor and Tobias Menzies all won.

Anderson won for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher, Menzies for the Duke of Edinburgh, and O’Connor for Prince Charles.

White actors took home all 12 acting awards across the comedy, drama and limited series categories.

It is noted that a record number of people of colour had been nominated this year. But no person of colour won in any of the acting categories.

Since the award show, #EmmysSoWhite has begun trending on Twitter.

Actors that were seen as solid contenders included Billy Porter, Mj Rodriguez and the late Michael K. Williams.

In the end, none of them won.

I May Destroy You’s Michaela Coel won for Outstanding Writing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.

“I dedicate this story to every single survivor of sexual assault,” Coel said as she accepted her award.

Coel made history as the first Black woman to win an Emmy for best limited series writing.
