The Weeknd Facing Copyright Lawsuit Over 2018 Hit ‘Call Out My Name’

Abel Tesfaye, known as The Weeknd has been hit with a plagiarism lawsuit over his single Call Out My Name.

Both Tesfaye and his collaborators Nicolas Jaar and Frank Duke are being sued by music producers Suniel Fox and Henry Strange over the similarity of material between their songs.

According to Law360, Fox and Strange claim that Call Out My Name contains elements from their 2015 track Vibeking.

The pair state that the songs “contain quantitatively and qualitatively similar material in their respective lead guitar and vocal hooks, including melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic elements distinctive to Vibeking.”

They also allege that they emailed their song to The Weeknd’s DJ and playback engineer PNDA, who later told them that Tesfaye described their track as “fire”.

They added that he reportedly implied that he wasn’t going to credit either Fox or Strange for their work.

“Just gonna tell [The Weeknd] that our production team wrote the track. Cool?,” they claim PNDA said.

The Weeknd has yet to make a comment on the suit or any of the claims. However, it’s not the first time the singer has been faced with a plagiarism lawsuit.

In 2015, Tesfaye was sued over his hit track The Hills after sampling music from Toy Raybould.
