The Weeknd, Olivia Rodrigo And H.E.R. Win Apple Music Awards
Apple Music has announced their third annual music award winners.
The virtual celebration (on December 7) to celebrate artists will include original content, interviews and more will be streamed both Apple Music and Apple TV.
And winning the biggest accolade of them all is The Weeknd, who walks away as Apple’s Global Artist of the Year award.
“I’m so grateful for this huge honor and want to thank Apple for all its support, not only for my work but also for great music by newer artists, where it matters so much for creators to be found and supported,” he said.
After an epic breakout year that saw Olivia Rodrigo sweep seven Grammy nominations, she has done it again with Apple’s awards.
The 18-year-old bagged Breakthrough Artist of the Year, Album of the Year for Sour, and Song of the Year for record-breaking debut single drivers license.
“I did my first interview for ‘drivers license‘ with Apple Music, and so much has happened since then,” said Rodrigo. “It’s surreal.”
And Songwriter of the Year was awarded to R&B artist H.E.R.
“Award-winning singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist H.E.R’s work within the R&B genre grew even more expansive in 2021 with the release of her acclaimed 21-track album Back of My Mind which captures the artist at her most brilliant, confident and freewheeling,” writes Apple Music.
The 24-year-old says she is “very honoured and blessed to receive this recognition.”
Five new regional Artist of the Year awards were also given this year.
Winners included Aya Nakamura (France), OFFICIAL HIGE DANDISM (Japan), RIN (Germany), Scriptonite (Russia) and Wizkid (Africa).
