Golden Globes controversy continues as Tom Cruise returns awards and NBC drops the 2022 ceremony

Big time Hollywood actor Tom Cruise has returned his three Golden Globes in response to continuously escalating criticism of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA).

Cruise joins many important industry figures who have decided to make a stand against the HFPA.

Avengers stars Scarlett Johansson and Mark Ruffalo have also spoken out against the organisation, in addition to WarnerMedia, Netflix and Amazon, who have each declared their intention to boycott the event until further reforms are made.

The recent reforms announced by the HFPA have fallen short of the expectations of many in the industry, who insist the changes do not go far enough to address the issues of diversity and ethics in the Golden Globes.

And now broadcaster NBC has made the decision to drop the awards all together and will not be providing coverage of the Golden Globes 2022.

Leading industry foundation Time’s Up released a statement in response to the news, saying: “This is a defining moment for Hollywood. Today we have an opportunity to recognise that, by speaking up against one powerful but deeply flawed system, we can begin to re-imagine a more equitable industry.”
