Adele Discusses Divorce, Weight Loss And Her Estranged Father
Adele’s highly anticipated one night only special, An Audience with Adele, and exclusive interview with Oprah Winfrey, has finally arrived, and absolutely everything was up for discussion.
The prime-time interview marked the first she has given about her new album.
The singer’s divorce from British entrepreneur Simon Konecki was spoken about at length.
“I’ve been obsessed with a nuclear family my whole life because I never came from one,” said Adele, who shares nine-year-old son Angelo with Konecki.
“I from a very young age promised myself that when I had kids, that we’d stay together. We would be that united family.”
Adele has openly discussed that she is using this album as a way to explain her divorce to her son and revealed she first realised her marriage was breaking down after taking a quiz in a glossy magazine, as reported by the BBC.
One of the questions asked, “what’s something that no one would ever know about you?”, and she blurted out to her friends: “I’m really not happy. I’m not living, I’m just plodding along.”
“They all gasped,” she recalled. “From there, I was like ‘What am I doing? What am I doing it for?’”
The star then went on to discuss her weight loss. She revealed she lost in total 100lbs over the course of two years. The weight loss opened up Adele up to a lot of discussion about her body, but she said it is nothing new. She said she “wasn’t shocked or even fazed by it, because my body has been objectified my entire career”.
“I was body positive then and I’m body positive now.” She added. “It’s not my job to validate how people feel about their bodies,” she continued. “I feel bad that it’s made anyone feel horrible about themselves, but that’s not my job.”
The singer also discussed her reconciliation with her estranged father, Marc Evans, before his death. The pair built a relationship over three years after Evans became unwell. “I had absolutely zero expectations of anybody because I learned not to have them through my dad,” she said. “He was the reason I haven’t fully accessed what it is to be in a loving, loving relationship with somebody.”
In the time, Evans admitted he had only listened to Adele’s first song, Hometown Glory. “He never ever played any of my other music,” she said. “He was like, ‘It’s too painful.’”
