Billie Eilish has recently fallen victim to online criticisms and took to her Instagram story after receiving harsh critique following the release of her June 2021 cover for British Vogue.

The cover, released May 7, features the star in custom Gucci and Agent Provocateur  – a completely different look for the 19-year-old as the ‘bad guy‘ singer usually sports looser clothing and spent years hiding her body.

In an interview prior to the release of the cover, Eilish predicted that critics would view her as a ‘hypocrite’ for this new makeover, despite being a well-known advocate for body positivity. She has previously been careful to protect herself from being sexualised by the media and has admitted to struggling with her own personal issues with body dysmorphia.

As predicted, leaving her baggy clothes at home and transforming into a blonde bombshell has received a lot of mixed reviews.

One Daily Mail article has accused her of selling out. The original headline reads: “‘Proof that money can make you change your values and sell out’: Billie Eilish shocks fans by swapping baggy clothes for lingerie – despite years of vowing to ‘hide her body’”. The sexist headline was soon altered into the viral meme by journalist and influencer Em Clarkson. Eilish then shared the meme to her millions of followers.
