American distance runner Shelby Houlihan has received a four year ban from track and field just one week ahead of the Olympic trials.

Houlihan, the US record holder in the women’s 1500 and 5000 meters, announced the news on 14 June to her Instagram.

The athlete was informed back in January that she tested positive for a banned substance, nandrolone.

“I had never even heard of nandrolone,” she writes in the lengthy Instagram caption, “I have since learned that it has long been understood by WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) that eating pork can lead to a false positive for nandrolone.”

Shelby provided the sample on December 15, 2020. When she was notified of the positive result, she put together a food log of everything she had eaten 5 days prior to the test.

She explained that she ate a burrito, containing pork, “approximately 10 hours before that drug test from an authentic Mexican food truck.”

The AIU  (Athletic Integrity Unit) have been notified by Shelby that this is most likely the source.
