Dove Cameron Slams Negative Commenters Against Braless Selfie

Dove Cameron has clapped back at haters by posting a braless selfie on Instagram. 

The 23-year-old actress shared two selfies on Tuesday, both with her wearing a white tank top without a bra.

The decision for her to post these images, particularly on a platform that removes sexually explicit photos on a daily basis, has been explained in two captions on her account.

She explains, “Women HAVE a history that has been systematically suppressed. Our collective spirituality has largely been tainted to fit the needs of men and those in power.

This has a profound effect on the self-esteem of girls and the women they become. This influence can be seen in their life choices, partners and financial security for the rest of their lives.

It also has an effect on the way their future partners will view them – and ultimately treat them. Our girls deserve better. The time to introduce feminism and woman-centered spirituality to ALL children is now.”

In a second caption, Dove uses a quote from Elizabeth Eiler, author of Singing Woman: Voices of the Sacred Feminine, “this is the age of the ascendant Feminine Principle. In such times as these, women are able to look at themselves with new concepts of value and brilliance.

However you inhabit and express being Woman, embrace yourself in that way today!”

Some commenters weren’t impressed by her “pinup girl,” posts, with one saying, “Honey, what are you posting? You’re a professional actress working with Disney, not a pinup girl,”

Many other commenters jumped on the bandwagon and disregarded the meaning behind her posts, and slated the Descendants actress. Dove responded to many, commenting, “This is being a role model. This is exactly being a role model,”

She said in another response, “I agree with you in the sense that it is not that deep or groundbreaking whatsoever … But it’s only a big deal because this society is so beyond backwards that they have demonised basic anatomy and are very up in arms about female bodily freedom.”
