George Clooney has described the shooting incident on the set of Rust, which led to the dead of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, as “insane”.

Appearing on the latest episode of Marc Maron’s WTF podcast, Clooney revealed that he doesn’t believe Baldwin can be blamed for the death of Hutchins, after the actor fired what he believed was an unloaded prop gun.

“Look, he may be a d**k, I don’t know the guy at all, but I’ve been on sets for 40 years, and the person that hands you the gun, the person that is responsible for the gun, is either the prop person or the armorer, period,” he said.

Although, Baldwin ultimately fired the weapon that killed Hutchins, reports have indicated that assistant director David Halls may have failed to fully check the weapon before handing it over to the actor.

“Every single time I’m handed a gun on set, every time they hand me a gun, I look at it, I open it. I show it to the person I’m pointing it to, I show it to the crew,” Clooney said, adding that the process should be repeated every time a gun is used.

Clooney also described the armorer’s lack of experience as “insane”, adding that it’s infuriating to read about the “stupid mistakes” made on the set of Rust.
