The Gucci family has issued a public statement denouncing the new Ridley Scott biopic, House of Gucci.

In the statement shared by Variety, descendants of former Gucci chairman, Aldo Gucci (portrayed by Al Pacino), brand the film “an insult”.

“The production of the film did not bother to consult the heirs before describing Aldo Gucci – president of the company for 30 years – and the members of the Gucci family as thugs, ignorant and insensitive to the world around them.”

The Gucci’s also claimed the film attributes “a tone and an attitude to the protagonists of the well-known events that never belonged to them.” It added, “This is extremely painful from a human point of view and an insult to the legacy on which the brand is built today.”

House of Gucci documents almost three decades of love and betrayal within the Gucci family and their iconic fashion house, culminating in the 1995 assassination of Maurizio Gucci by his former wife, Patrizia Reggiani.

The also statement accuses the film and its castmates of portraying Reggiani “as a victim trying to survive in a male and male chauvinist corporate culture.”

“This couldn’t be further from the truth,” it added, calling the brand “inclusive” and pointing out the numerous women who were in positions of power within the company during this period.

Gucci is a family that lives honouring the work of its ancestors, whose memory does not deserve to be disturbed to stage a spectacle that is untrue and which does not do justice to its protagonists.”

It concluded, “The members of the Gucci family reserve the right to take action to protect the name, image and dignity of themselves and their loved ones.”
