Iga Świątek Becomes World Number One With Miami Open Triumph

20-year-old Iga Świątek is the world number one, and marked her achievement with a formidable Miami Open run that resulted in the title.
The Polish star beat Naomi Osaka in straight sets in the final 6-4 6-0, meaning that she avoided dropping a single set during the entire tournament.
Świątek has extended her winning streak to 17 matches, and success in Miami makes it her third title in a row.
She also won WTA 1000 titles in Doha, and Indian Wells to complete the ‘Sunshine Double’.
“I just feel really satisfied and fulfilled and also proud of myself,” Świątek said following the final. “I feel like I have got to celebrate, because I don’t know how long I can keep up with this streak.”

Her newfound position at the top of the rankings sees her taking over from recently retired Ashleigh Barty. Upon hearing the news of Barty’s retirement, Świątek admitted she cried for “40 minutes”.
“Mainly, it was because of Ash’s retirement. I didn’t know it was going to happen and it really surprised me,” she told BBC Sport. “I always had this vision that we would all play until we are 35 or something.”
Świątek becomes the first Polish player to reach the top ranking in singles.
