Jake Gyllenhaal is to star in Studio 8’s comic book adaptation, Prophet.

The new film is based on the comic book series by Rob Liefeld.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gyllenhaal will play John Prophet – a man conscripted by the Germans in World War II and subjected to experiments that leave him with superhuman strength.

Buried underground during a bombing, Prophet awakens 20 years later in 1965. He finds the world has moved on without him, with a daughter who resents him and KGB officers who hunt him.

Helming the new project is director Sam Hargrave, with Marc Guggenheim penning the script. Jeff Robinov, John Graham, Adrian Askarieh and Brooklyn Weaver will produce.

“It’s been a goal of ours to work with Jake and Sam for quite some time, so we’re very excited to finally be collaborating with them on this unique, action-packed genre film,” said Robinov for Studio 8.

“I’m looking forward to seeing what they envision for bringing the story to life – a story we’re sure will stand out in the comic book world as a powerful, emotionally charged and visually distinctive film.”

Gyllenhaal is best known for his roles in Donnie Darko, Brokeback Mountain, and Nightcrawler. Currently, the 40-year-old actor is working on the productions of Lake Success and The Son.
