John Boyega is the latest star to join historical drama, The Woman King.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Boyega will portray King Ghezo. Already attached to the project are stars, Viola Davis, Thuso Mbedu and Lashana Lynch.

The Woman King is described as a historical epic, inspired by the story of the Kingdom of Dahomey in the 18th and 19th centuries. The story follows Nanisca (Davis) – the general of an all female military unit – and new recruit, Nawi (Mbedu). Together, the pair fought enemies who enslaved their people and destroyed everything they lived for.

Gina Prince-Bythewood is directing the feature, from a script penned by Dana Stevens. Cathy Shulman will produce alongside Viola Davis, Julius Tennon and Maria Bello.

“I have been enamoured by John’s immense talent for years,” declared Prince-Bythewood.

“But his speech to Black women during the protests cemented my desire to work with him. The description of King Ghezo reads, ‘He walks as if the earth were honored by its burden’. John possesses that innate depth and swagger, and I’m so excited to put it on screen.”

Boyega is best known for playing Finn in Disney’s Star Wars trilogy. His other most notable films include Attack The Block, Detroit and Pacific Rim: Uprising.
