Johnny Depp To Play French King Louis XV In Upcoming Film

Johnny Depp has reportedly bagged the role of King Louis XV in Maiwenn’s next feature.

Confirming news of the casting, Variety reported that Pascal Caucheteux and Gregoire Sorlat’s Why Not Productions would produce the film. Director Maiwenn will also star alongside Depp as Jeanne du Barry, the king’s last mistress.

The yet-untitled project will focus on Louis XV – the late French king who reigned for 59 years. He would go down in infamy for his alleged affairs and corruption.

The new project marks Depp’s first major feature since 2020’s Minamata, which covered the tragic mercury poisoning in the titular Japanese city.

The 58-year-old actor has faced an apparent Hollywood boycott following multiple legal battles and accusations that he abused his ex-wife Amber Heard. He has consistently denied all allegations.

Production on the new picture will reportedly take place over three months in France, using locations including the Versailles Palace.
