Kate Winslet says she shut down any attempt to airbrush away her ‘bulgy belly’ in a sex scene for Mare of Easttown.

Winslet stars as Mare Sheehan in the HBO series – a detective investigating the murder of a teenager while attempting to keep her own life from falling apart.

In an interview with The New York Times, Winslet says she hopes, “people have connected with this character in the way that they have done because there are clearly no filters”.

When director Craig Zobel suggested he would edit out her “bulgy belly” from a sex scene with Guy Pearce, Winslet told him, “don’t you dare!”

Winslet says she repeatedly shut down attempts to remove perceived imperfections in her appearance. She wanted to make sure the character’s appearance matched her intended background.

“They were like ‘Kate, really, you can’t,’ and I’m like ‘Guys, I know how many lines I have by the side of my eye, please put them all back.’” She went on to say that they had purposefully lit her face “to make it look not nice.”

“She’s a fully functioning, flawed woman with a body and a face that moves in a way that is synonymous with her age and her life and where she comes from. I think we’re starved of that a bit.”
