Kim Kardashian Sparks Outrage With New ‘Kimono’ Shapewear

Kim Kardashian has been called “tasteless and awful” for her new Kimono Shapewear collection.
She has expanded her beauty range by introducing a “new solution focused approach to shape enhancing underwear,” and is “Kim’s personal experience with shapewear and is fueled by her passion to create truly considered and highly technical solutions for every body”
The Kimono statement continues to say, “Whether the desire is to enhance, smooth, life or sculpt, Kimono provides superior options for all shapes and tones.”
In a tweet, she shared her excitement about the new beauty range, saying, “Finally, I can share with you guys this project that I have been developing for the last year,” explaining that the new line was her own solution to needing different shapewear styles depending on the daily outfit choice, and the option to have nude colours for all skin tones.
Besides the issue people are raising on social media suggesting it’s shaming people’s body types, Kim has upset many in regards to the name choice.
Understanding that Kim, along with her sisters, has tried to incorporate her name into the brand, Kimono, or kimono without the capitalised K, is actually a traditional, and cultural, Japanese robe.
One user wrote, “Why’s it called kimono if that’s a completely different style of clothing. I get that you’re incorporating your name but kimono is the name of a traditional (and cultural) japanese robe.”
Another commenter said, “Absolutely tasteless and awful. You have ZERO respect to the Japanese culture, do you. What’s wrong with you. I’m from Japan. For us, Kimono represents the beauty & elegance of the country’s tradition. You spandex underwear brand has nothing to do with it. I’m offended.”
Yiko Kato, a BBC News Japanese editor, tweeted, “Nice underwear, but as a Japanese woman who loves to wear our traditional dress, kimono, I find the naming of your products baffling (since it has no resemblance to kimono), if not outright culturally offensive, especially if it’s merely a word play on your name. Pls reconsider,”
According to a source, Kim has filed to trademark several version of the brand, including Kimono which has previously been trademarked by a software company and a pen holder-manufacturing company. Other brand terms are Kimono Body, Kimono World and Kimono Intimates.
The sizes are from XXS-4XL and have nine different shades.
