Labor Day is traditionally one of the quietest weekends in the US calendar.
The Friday-Sunday box office figures for Marvel’s first film starring an Asian superhero are amongst the best throughout the pandemic.

The Walt Disney Company opted to have a cinema-only release rather than the hybrid release used for previous films released recently.
Forecasted figures for Shang-Chi had only been close to $50m.
Many are hailing the release as a massive boost for the return of in theatre film releases.
“Shang-Chi is the ultimate confidence-builder for the theatrical movie industry,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for data firm Comscore, as reported in The Guardian.
“This was a very important film. This was the first Marvel movie that’s opened exclusively theatrically since Spider-Man: Far From Home in July 2019.”
“Shang-Chi is a real testament of the power of a theatrical-first strategy to drive huge numbers of moviegoers to the multiplex.”
