F1 race director Michael Masi has been removed from his position following an investigation into the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix last December.

The title came down to a one lap sprint, with Max Verstappen overtaking Lewis Hamilton to clinch the win.

But the safety car restart rules were incorrectly applied by Masi, causing mass uproar and throwing the integrity of the race into question.

On Thursday it was announced by new FIA president Mohammed ben Sulayem that Masi had been removed from his position as a result of him failing to conduct the race correctly.

Masi has been replaced by an overhauled system, with controlling and officiating of F1 races being handled across multiple people.

It has also been confirmed that teams will no longer be allowed to message the race director directly, after Masi was inundated with messages last December.
