Amid the doping scandal dominating the headlines, ROC’s Kamila Valieva has dropped from first to fourth place following her individual skate.

The 15-year-old skater has dominated the Winter Olympic headlines after she returned a positive drugs test.

She was eventually cleared to compete as she helped the Russian Olympic Committee to a team gold. You can read more about this here.

Valieva put herself in pole position for the individual gold when she ended the first skate at the top of the leaderboard.

But despite coming into the final skate in cruise control, it appears the events of the last ten days may have finally caught up to the young skater.

Multiple falls in her free skate saw her drop from first to fourth, agonisingly missing out on a medal. Valieva was in tears as she awaited the score.

Fellow ROC skaters Anna Shcherbakova and Alexandra Trusova won gold and silver respectively.

Japan’s Sakamoto Kaori broke up the Russian dominance by collecting bronze.

The International Olympic Committee had previously stated that should Valieva podium, no medal ceremony would go ahead as the doping investigation continued.

But with the teen missing out, the athletes who finished in the top three were awarded their coveted Olympic medals.
