Game of Thrones actress Nathalie Emmanuel has addressed the controversial death of her character Missandei in the 8th season of the critically acclaimed show.

Missandei featured as one of the major confidantes of Daenerys Targaryen (played by Emilia Clark). Many fans were outraged by her death, as one of the few ethnically diverse characters in the show.

Speaking with Variety, Emmanuel admitted that the audience’s reaction to her character’s death had surprised her.

“When I learned that Missandei was going to die, I knew that, as the only woman of color on the show, I knew that people would feel her loss, like the loss of her, because she’s also just like a really kind, good character.” Said Emmanuel. “I was not anticipating, I guess, the size of the reaction that happened.”

“I think that really sparked a conversation about, when we make these shows in the future, when we are casting these shows, like, do we just have to have the one person—is there space for more of us? And I think the answer is yes. I know the answer is yes.”

Featuring in the recently released Fast & Furious 9, Emmanuel will also appear in the upcoming heist film, Army of Thieves.
