Netflix and Howard University have announced the creation of a $5.4 million scholarship in honour of former alumnus, Chadwick Boseman.

Announced on the university’s Twitter page, the scholarship was funded in partnership with Boseman’s family and Netflix. The scholarship will reportedly cover four years of tuition for selected students.

According to The Guardian, Boseman’s wife praised the scholarship as an opportunity for young artists.

“We hope to support as many students as possible by removing the final barrier to education.” She said. “I’m overwhelmed with gratitude and amazed at the love and dedication shown by so many continuing to honour my husband’s work. I know he’d be proud.”

Last month Howard University formally renamed the College of Fine Arts in memory of the Black Panther actor.

Boseman passed away last year following a battle with colon cancer. He was posthumously nominated for best actor at the 2021 Oscars, for his performance in Netflix’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

In a post to a newly formed Instagram page for the scholarship, the first four recipients of the Chadwick A. Boseman Memorial Scholarship were announced.

“Sending a huge congrats to @Howard1867’s Sarah Long, Shawn Smith, Jenee’ Ferguson and Deidre Dunkin,” reads the post.
