Opinion: Is Olivia Rodrigo The New Supreme of Pop?

Pop sensation Olivia Rodrigo has released her music video for teen angst anthem Brutal, and it’s all anyone can talk about.
Olivia Rodrgio began her showbiz career in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series as Nini Salazar-Roberts. She burst onto the mainstream music scene with the release of Drivers License, a heart wrenching ballad about her first love deciding they would rather be with “that blonde girl”.
As soon as the song dropped, the question on everyone’s list was, “who is the song about?”
Rumours circulated that it was Joshua Bassett, Rodrigo’s co-star in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. The “blonde girl” is rumoured to be actress Sabrina Carpenter.
Whatever happened – and with who – it provided Rodrigo with the inspiration to write one of the most successful albums of the year. She became a household name overnight, so are we seeing the rise of the new supreme of pop?
The only correct answer is, yes.
The star tweeted:

The Brutal music video has more pop culture references than stars in the sky and has cemented her place amongst the next generation of pop icons.
It is very on brand with Petra Collins’ signature vaseline-on-camera-lens aesthetic and fits perfectly with the sad but glamorous theme of the song.
The video took inspiration from Clueless, featured familiar looking instagram filters and multiple cameos from Gen-Z icons.
Filled with baby-tee’s and plaid skirts, everything about the video screams Y2K nostalgia. Rodrigo even wears the same iconic Roberto Cavalli dress that pop-icon Britney Spears wore at the 2003 American Music Awards.
In the video, and in the rest of Rodrigo’s work so far, she has perfectly mastered the Y2K trend but it somehow feels brand new.
The reviews of Sour cemented it’s place amongst other iconic debut pop album’s, like Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morrisette, Tragic Kingdom by No Doubt and Taylor Swift‘s Red.
The expertly crafted partnership between Rodrgio and Collins‘ and sheer amount of talent exhibited in Brutal has us all hungry to see what she does next.
