Ellen Burstyn will return as Chris MacNeil in Universal’s new ‘The Exorcist‘ trilogy.

Burstyn famously starred in the 1973 original film with her on-screen daughter, Linda Blair. The film was adapted by William Peter Blatty, from his book by the same name.

The original story followed the possession of a 12-year-old girl (Blair) and the efforts of two priests (Max von Sydow and Jason Miller) to try and save her.

Leslie Odom Jr will join Burstyn in the new feature. He takes on the role of a father who seeks out MacNeil when his own child is possessed.

Empire reports that Halloween director, David Gordon Green has taken on the trilogy, which Universal is financing with an eye-watering $400 million budget.

The new film hopes to arrive in cinemas by 2023.
