‘Shameless’ Star Emma Kenney Says Emmy Rossum Made Her Anxious

Shameless star Emma Kenney states that she felt “anxious” performing scenes with co-star Emmy Rossum.
In a conversation on the Call Her Daddy podcast, Kenney discussed her experience working on the show. Addressing the dynamics on set, Kenney said that many of her co-stars felt like family.
However, her relationship with her on-screen older sister, Rossum, appeared more complex.
Asked whether their relationship mirrored that of real siblings, Kenney replied: “One hundred percent. In good and bad ways to be honest.”
“We were both so young – I was obviously a lot younger. There were times when she would try to be a good influence and then there were times where she would blatantly be giving me… Not the best advice. And maybe she was struggling with her own inner problems and taking it out on other people. But we all handle situations differently.”
“Growing up I took note from – not just from her in particular – things I want to carry on in my life and things I do not want to carry on.”
Kenny admitted to feeling a competitive dynamic between the two of them which confused her.
“I never understood it because I was 9 and she was like over ten years older than me. So I’m like ‘why is there a weird competition here when I’m not trying to compete’. I don’t know if it was other people on set or if it was her creating it. But I know I wasn’t creating it.”
Asked how she felt when Rossum exited the show in 2018, she called it “bittersweet”.
“It was weird at first, for sure, but it also… the set became more of a positive place, I’m not going to lie,” she confessed. “Pre her leaving, I’d go to set some days and I’d be very anxious about having a scene with her.”
“If she had a bad day, she made it a bad day for everybody.”
