Irrfan Khan has died at the age of 53 after losing his battle with cancer.

The Slumdog Millionaire star revealed in 2018 that he had an endocrine tumour, which affects cells that release hormones into the bloodstream, and underwent treatment in a London hospital for the rare illness.

On Tuesday, he was moved into the intensive care unit due to a colon infection before passing away on Wednesday morning. A statement reads, “It’s saddening that this day, we have to bring forward the news of him passing away … Irrfan was a strong soul, someone who fought till the very end and always inspired everyone who came close to him.”

He starred in various Bollywood films before swiftly moving into Hollywood where he played a role in nearly six films a year for over two decades, including Hindi Medium, Life of Pi, The Lunchbox, Inferno, Slumdog Millionaire, Blackmail, Jurassic World, The Amazing Spider-Man and Piku.
