Streaming platform Twitch has attributed yesterday’s massive data leak to an “error” in one of its servers.

The leak yesterday (October 6), resulted in the exposure of payment information, business documents, software files and information on unreleased projects. It was also reported that the source code for the entire platform was also made public.

Allegedly posted by an anonymous user on 4chan, the leaked files were labelled ‘Part One’, indicating another leak may be on the way. The Video Game Chronicle states that the user wanted to “foster more disruption and competition in the online video streaming space”.

An official update on the Twitch website addressed the incident:

“We have learned that some data was exposed to the internet due to an error in a Twitch server configuration change that was subsequently accessed by a malicious third party. Our teams are working with urgency to investigate the incident.”

Stressing that the leak was still being investigated, Twitch added that they did not believe login credentials or full credit card numbers were exposed.

In the most recent update, Twitch said it had reset all stream keys, “Out of an abundance of caution”.
