Samuel L. Jackson Discusses His Struggles With Drug Addiction

Actor Samuel L. Jackson has opened up about his struggles with drug addiction, crediting his family for saving his life.
The 73-year-old actor has been married to Broadway actress LaTanya Richardson Jackson, for 41 years and they share a daughter named Zoe.
In this week’s issue of People, the couple sat down for an intimate interview to discus their love and life.
Samuel revealed that early on in marriage he became addicted to drugs and admitted he was not emotionally present for his family.
“I had basically moved into the basement of our brownstone. I was like the troll in the basement, and every now and then I’d come upstairs and hover around to do something. I was addicted and being crazy,” he said.
As his addiction spiralled out of control, LaTanya made the decision to send Samuel to rehab, a decision which the actor says saved his life.
“She didn’t have to try to fix me. She could’ve just said, ‘Get out,’ and left me into the world, let me go and be whatever I was going to be,” he said.
LaTanya added that she felt she had to help Samuel no matter what as God had told her to do so.
“I couldn’t do that [leave] because I felt as though God had spoken to me and said, ‘Now, you can’t leave this young man like this. Give him some help.”
“And then, if you feel like leaving afterwards, we’ll talk about it.’”
