Netflix Casts Daniel Dae Kim In Live-Action ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’

Daniel Dae Kim has joined the cast of Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Kim is set to portray antagonist Fire Lord Ozai. The character is described as the ruthlessly-driven leader of the Fire nation and father to Prince Zuko. He features as one of the most integral characters in the popular animated series, determined to conquer the world and win the war started by his ancestors.

Showrunner Albert Kim is writing the series, with Michael Goi, Roseanne Liang, Jabbar Raisani and Jet Wilkinson directing.

Netflix confirmed Kim’s casting via Twitter: “Daniel Dae Kim has joined the cast of Avatar: The Last Airbender!”

The 53-year-old actor joins starring castmates Gordon Cormier (Aang), Kiawentiio (Katara), Ian Ousley (Sokka) and Dallas Liu (Zuko).

Kim has enjoyed previous involvement with the franchise. He provided the voice of General Fong in the animated series and also voiced Hiroshi Sato for the spinoff show, The Legend of Korra.

Days before the announcement, Kim posted a photo of himself with series showrunner Albert Kim. “Always nice to catch up with friends like these,” he wrote. “Excited to hear all of the amazing things they’re up to! #comingsoon”

Daniel Dae Kim rose to prominence for his roles in Lost and Hawaii Five-0. He also appeared in 2019’s Hellboy, Allegiant and Stowaway.
