Director Denis Villeneuve will return to direct the second instalment, which is already scheduled to arrive on October 20, 2023.
Dune made its debut in cinemas and HBO Max on October 22. It marked Villeneuve’s most successful film opening, grossing $17.5 million on its first day.
In a statement shared by The Hollywood Reporter, Villeneuve said: “I just received news from Legendary that we are officially moving forward with Dune: Part Two.”
“It was a dream of mine to adapt Frank Herbert’s Dune and I have the fans, the cast, and the crew, Legendary and Warner Bros. to thank for supporting this dream. This is only the beginning.”
The film, based on the sci-fi novel by Frank Herbert, follows a noble son named Paul Atreides, whose family are given stewardship over the planet Arrakis and the galaxy’s most valuable resource. Timothée Chalamet stars alongside Oscar Isaac, Jason Momoa, Stellan Skarsgård, Rebecca Ferguson, John Brolin, and Zendaya.
