Bruce Willis is stepping away from his acting career after being diagnosed with aphasia.
The news was announced in a joint statement from Willis‘ wife Emma, ex-wife Demi Moore and five daughters Rumer, Scout, Tallulah, Mabel and Evelyn.
“As a family, we wanted to share that our beloved Bruce has been experiencing some health issues and has recently been diagnosed with aphasia, which is impacting his cognitive abilities,” read the statement.
“As a result of this and with much consideration, Bruce is stepping away from the career that has meant so much to him.”
“This is a really challenging time for our family and we are so appreciative of your continued love, compassion and support. We are moving through this as a strong family unit, and wanted to bring his fans in because we know how much he means to you, as you do to him.”

Aphasia is defined by the NHS as a disorder that disrupts a person’s ability to communicate either through speech, writing, reading or listening. It can also cause problems with memory, mobility and visuals.
Willis, who boasts around an astounding 145 credits, began his acting career in the 1980s, gaining prominence for his Emmy Award and Golden Globe winning performance as Cybil Shepherd in Moonlighting. Since then, Willis went on to become something of an action icon, starring in the likes of Die Hard, Pulp Fiction, The Fifth Element, The Sixth Sense, and Armageddon.
A number of friends and former co-stars showed their support in the comments section, with Jamie Lee Curtis writing, “Grace and guts! Love to you all!”
“My heart goes out to Bruce and all the family,” wrote Rita Wilson. “So thankful you shared this with us. Keeping you all in our prayers.”
